Introduction


    Hello reader, my name is Aurimas, I am a 22-year old student in South-East Technological University (SETU) on Waterford campus in Ireland. The purpose of this first blog is for me to introduce myself to the audience. Over the coming two months I will be posting discussions on a weekly basis with topics related to small business, which I hope will spark a discussion among the readers and will help me engage with you.

    I am in my last year of studies at SETU, last year I decided to specialise in management and went on to do my work experience in retail management. The work placement I took upon myself lasted over 5 months commencing in January of 2024, after which I stayed in the same role during the next 3 months over the summer as a supervisor. I have enjoyed the work and learned an incredible amount of skills in IT, people and department management, and gained a great basket of knowledge to use in the future after the completion of my course and once I start working full-time in a similar business environment.

    At the beginning of my work placement, I did not think that I will enjoy working with people and managing them and their work, but surprisingly I did very much. I am incredibly curious about what other people have graduated in. What kind of experience have you gained or had during your placement, and more importantly, did your expectations beat the reality or other way around and what are your opinions on people going into workforce to build themselves up instead of spending 3-4 years in a classroom or a lab.
