Evolution of Internet Technologies: From Web 1.0 to Web 3.0

Evolution of the Internet has been an incredibly fast ride, even though it began in 1990, it has come a long way. Most people have no idea what the difference is, as they assume that internet and web is the same thing, just used interchangeably, this is not true. Web is an actual page that you would read, or watch on, while the internet is the host through which you engage with the content. Imagine that the internet is a highway, while the web is the car.

What changed since the 1990, well, an incredible number of things. Firstly, the way that the content is presented, as the web 1.0 was primarily a read-only while web 3.0 today is read-write and interact. Some examples of this would be going from google or msn to bitcoin or Coinbase. The very first webs were coded using HTML and Java, it was primarily to provide content to the users, as time went on, this wasn't enough. This technology further developed into web 2.0 in 2006 at the start of social media, today’s giants such as Facebook and YouTube emerged during this time. Some other popular apps and websites known today from web 2.0 are Snapchat, Spotify, LinkedIn and Tinder. Today in 2024, 18 years later this technology goes further beyond social media, with web 3.0 providing anonymity, security, blockchains and the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for people to make money on digital currency by trading it, building a financial future and empower the users.

Web 3.0 still has a long way to go, but as AI develops, so will the possibilities. When non-fungible tokens (NFT’s) first became incredibly popular in early 2020, many businessmen took advantage of the technology to make money, what do you think will be the next big thing?
